Fishery notifications

Exploratory fishery notifications

Exploratory fisheries are those fisheries where there is a need to collect sufficient information to:

  • evaluate the distribution, abundance and demography of the target species, leading to an estimate of the fishery’s potential yield
  • review the fishery’s potential impacts on dependent and related species
  • allow the Scientific Committee to formulate and provide advice to the Commission on appropriate harvest catch levels, as well as effort levels and fishing gear, where appropriate.

Members intending to participate in an exploratory fishery must submit notifications and related information to the Commission by 1 June. The procedures for exploratory fishery notification submissions are described in Conservation Measure 21-02. Details for exploratory krill fisheries are described in Conservation Measure 51-04.

Guidelines have been provided for Members wishing to submit an exploratory fishery notification for the next season at CCAMLR online support.

Krill fishery notifications

Established fisheries for krill (Euphausia superba) currently operate in Subareas 48.1, 48.2, 48.3 and 48.4, and Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2. Members intending to participate in these established krill fisheries must notify the Commission no later than 1 June. The procedures for krill fishery notification submissions are described in Conservation Measure 21-03.

Guidelines have been provided for Members wishing to submit a krill fishery notification for the next season at CCAMLR online support.

Members intending to fish for krill in subareas or divisions not listed above are required to submit an exploratory fishery notification under Conservation Measure 21-02.

New fishery notifications

A new fishery targets a single species using a particular fishing method in a subarea or division for which:

  • information on distribution, abundance, demography, potential yield and stock identity from comprehensive research/surveys or exploratory fishing have not been submitted to CCAMLR; or
  • catch and effort data have never been submitted to CCAMLR; or
  • catch and effort data from the two most recent seasons in which fishing occurred have not been submitted to CCAMLR.

Members intending to participate in a new fishery are required to submit notifications and related information to the Commission by 20 July. The procedures for new fishery notifications submissions are described in Conservation Measure 21-01.

Members wishing to submit a new fishery notification for the next season are advised to ccamlr [at] ccamlr [dot] org (subject: New%20fishery%20notification) (contact the Secretariat).
