6.4.1 Extent to which CCAMLR cooperates with other international organisations

Recommendation Responsible body Activities to date Status
6.4.1.1 In relation to Observers, CCAMLR should now critically re-examine its relationship with a range of organisations providing Observers to ensure that of the exchange of information is maximised and the working relationship with the bodies they represent is transparent, effective and dynamic. Commission (2008)CCAMLR-XXVII, Annex 5, paragraph 7.6;
(2009)CCAMLR-XXVIII, Annex 5, paragraph 7.3(iii.a) – SCIC noted exchanges with several other IGOs;
(2008)SC-CAMLR-XXVII, paragraph 10.10;
(2009)SC-CAMLR-XXVIII/07 ;
(2009)SC-CAMLR-XXVIII, paragraphs 10.12 to 10.14.
Commission – Ongoing
6.4.1.2 CCAMLR should heighten the priority of examining the need for, and concluding agreements with, other organisations to enhance its own effectiveness and pursue its objectives. Possible candidates could include SEAFO, SWIOFC, tuna RFMOs (in particular CCSBT) and environmental organisations such as ACAP and CITES. Commission

(2009)CCAMLR-XXVIII, paragraph 15.12 in relation to ACAP;
(2009)CCAMLR-XXVIII, paragraph 15.24 in relation to CCSBT;

(2009)CCAMLR-XXVIII, paragraph 15.27 in relation to FAO/FIRMS;
(2012)CCAMLR-XXXI, paragraph 9.16 in relation to SIOFA and SPRFMO;
(2013)CCAMLR-XXXII, paragraph 9.15 renewal of arrangements with WCPFC and CCSBT;
(2013)CCAMLR-XXXII, paragraphs 9.18 and 9.19 in relation to SPRFMO and SIOFA;
(2015)CCAMLR-XXXIV, paragraph 10.19 in relation to SPRFMO;
(2016)CCAMLR-XXXV, paragraph 10.21 in relation to SPRFMO;
(2016)CCAMLR-XXXV, paragraphs 10.22 to 10.24 in relation to SEAFO and SIOFA.

CCAMLR has established an agreement with ACAP and a cooperative arrangement with CCSBT.  The Executive Secretary has written to SPRFMO and SEAFO regarding the possibility of formalising an arrangement on cooperation.
6.4.1.3 At routine intervals, CCAMLR should examine its own regulatory provisions against contemporary developments either in RFMOs or in wider instruments applicable to fisheries, environment and broader governance to ensure to the extent possible best practice continues to be adopted and achieved by CCAMLR.
